What is ready-mixed concrete?
Pre-mixed and ready to be used, ready-mixed concrete is produced off-site and delivered in plastic form. Also known as batched concrete, we use the latest technology to produce concrete to set specifications. Whether you need custom materials and ingredients or a more standard composition, our computer-controlled system ensures ingredients are measured accurately and added at appropriate time intervals.
Once delivered to the site, ready-mix concrete can be used straight away. A mixture of ground lines and boom pumps, we can ensure your concrete gets to where it’s needed.
What is volumetric pumping?
Effectively produced on-site, volumetric pumping enables concrete to be produced and mixed in specialist volumetric mobile mixers. With expertly-designed trucks, volumetric pumping involves bringing the materials to the site in a dry state and having them prepared in the truck before being delivered to the exact pouring location.
Also a form of ready-mixed concrete, construction firms can benefit from the mess-free delivery system, accurate composition and speedy production of industrial-grade concrete when volumetric pumping is used.
What’s the difference between batched concrete and volumetric pumping?
Batched concrete is typically produced off-site, in one centralized location, and then delivered to the site in liquid or plastic form. Whilst the concrete is agitated in the truck to prevent setting, it has been produced and mixed at an off-site plant, such as the specialist MBS Readymix batch plant.
In contrast, volumetric pumping mixes the concrete on site, within specialist trucks. Whilst the materials are pre-prepared and accurately weighted, the actual mixing of the concrete occurs on site, rather than at the batch plant itself. In some cases, a number of materials may have been pre-mixed, with other ingredients being added in the truck, when on site. Often referred to as a mobile or mini batch plant, volumetric pumping effectively brings batch plant facilities directly to your site.

Should you use batched concrete or volumetric pumping?
Both centrally-batched concrete and volumetric pumping provide a cost-efficient and hassle-free way of getting industrial-grade concrete to the relevant pouring locations, and both options can be advantageous for your business.
Batched concrete can be ideal for a number of projects, but there are instances in which volumetric pumping may be more effective. When concrete is mixed and batched at a central location, it’s necessary to specify the composition you require prior to the concrete reaching your site. With volumetric pumping, however, the specification of your concrete can be modified at any time. If construction plans need to be changed or weather conditions require amendments to the mix, the constitution of the concrete can be altered in the volumetric mixer, ensuring you have the perfect concrete for the job.
Furthermore, volumetric pumping ensures larger jobs can be completed without numerous deliveries of batched concrete. As raw materials can be added to the volumetric mixer on site, it can continue to produce concrete for as long as you need it to. Perfect for larger jobs or projects which require various different compositions, volumetric pumping ensures you have the freedom to modify your concrete as and when you need to.
Benefits of ready-mixed concrete
Using batched ready-mixed concrete and/or volumetric pumping, or a combination of both, you can have concrete delivered direct to the relevant pouring locations, reducing cost, time and manpower. With a range of benefits associated with pre-prepared, ready-mixed concrete, projects can be completed more quickly and in accordance with various Building Standards.
Reduced costs and waste
Preparing and mixing concrete yourself can be a big endeavour, and it typically requires a lot of equipment and manpower. Furthermore, most companies don’t have the specialist equipment required to accurately weigh the components prior to mixing. This can result in wasted materials and sub-standard concrete, which could put the project and your reputation at risk.
As concrete is used in a variety of building models, it’s vital that it’s produced to the appropriate standards, and that it can withstand the pressure and weight of the structure it will hold. Using ready-mixed concrete negates the need for your team to prepare and produce concrete on site, and it also ensures that your concrete is mixed to an appropriate standard.

Save on manpower
If you attempt to mix concrete on site, you’ll need a significant amount of manpower to achieve the output you need. As well as having specialist technicians to mix the concrete, you’ll need a number of workers to physically move the concrete from the mixing location to the pouring location. Traditional methods, such as using a wheelbarrow to move the concrete, are labour intensive and slow.
As well as increasing your costs, the length of time it takes to get the concrete from the on-site mixing to the location can reduce the quality of the concrete. If it begins to set or if air affects its consistency, the materials could be wasted by the time they actually reach the pouring location, thus adding to the costs you’ve already incurred.
By choosing to use ready-mixed concrete, you can avoid these costs and ensure that you only pay for the concrete you need. As ready-mixed concrete can be delivered straight to the pouring location via ground pipes and booms, you won’t require numerous workers to transport the concrete, thus reducing labour costs.
Cut down on waste
Furthermore, waste is practically non-existent when you use ready-mixed concrete. Trucks are carefully metered so that your usage is monitored, and you only need to pay for what you use. With materials always maintaining a high standard, you aren’t stuck paying for concrete which can’t be used or concrete which has been exposed to the air for too long and is no longer usable.
As a result, construction firms and building companies can make significant savings by using ready-mixed concrete. Innovative delivery methods and cost-saving production options ensure you have continually access the concrete you need, without the increased costs associated with on-site production.
Hassle-free concrete pouring
Getting concrete to the relevant pouring locations used to be one of the trickiest parts of the job. Large sites, uneven surfaces and existing buildings can all get in the way of traditional delivery methods, and make it increasingly difficult to get concrete to the particular pouring location before it becomes unusable.
With ground lines and concrete booms, however, your concrete can be sent straight to the relevant pouring location, regardless of how difficult it may be to access. Ground lines can be used to pump ready-mixed concrete up to distances of 150 metres, and sending the lines around buildings or across uneven surfaces presents no problems. With a delivery rate of 1 cubic metre per minute, ground lines provide an efficient delivery method for sites of all sizes.
If your pouring locations are particularly difficult to access, a concrete boom can also be used to ensure high-speed delivery. Using the latest technology, a remote-controlled robotic arm delivers ready-mixed concrete to exactly where you need it. Perfect for large construction sites, concrete can be delivered at high-speed, over large areas.
With a vertical reach of 137ft and a horizontal reach of 124.7ft, our concrete booms can deliver concrete at a rate of 30 cubic metres per hour, so even large sites can access efficient concrete delivery.
In addition to this, delivery via ground lines and concrete booms reduces spillages and the need for subsequent clean-up operations. With no mess and no waste, ready-mixed concrete ensures a cleaner site and a more efficient use of your manpower.
Fast concrete delivery
Depending on delivery methods, ready-mixed concrete can be transported from our specialist lorries to the relevant pouring location in a matter of minutes. However, we ensure that your concrete delivery is even more efficient by sending the ground lines and/or concrete boom ahead of the ready-mixed concrete.
Arriving at least 30 minutes earlier than the concrete, your delivery lines can be set up and ready to use as soon as the concrete arrives, thus ensuring your project goes without a hitch. With a myriad of other tasks on hold until your concrete has arrived, you can rely on MBS Readymix to deliver your concrete on time and to your exact specification, every time.
One of the most cost-effective ways to access the concrete you need, ready-mixed concrete and volumetric pumping is the obvious choice when it comes to concrete production, mixing and delivery. With specialist mixing methods and innovative delivery equipment, your concrete can be created to standard or custom specifications and delivered to any pouring location you require.
